It started with good behaviour

In primary school, good behaviour got rewarded with something better than sweets: time on the desktop computers in the library. Other students would ask me to use them, ask me to show them things — and I honestly believe that was God's way of starting me on this path. I fell in love with computers early, around seven or eight. I didn't just want to use them; I wanted to know how they worked, what made the internet work, all of it. Mobile phones too — anything with a screen, I was pulling at it.

The method nobody teaches: dissect, don't memorise

When I decided to learn websites, I started with HTML and CSS — then made a decision that shaped everything. Instead of grinding through every programming language from A to Z, I went and found finished HTML templates and dissected them. Opened them up, saw how they worked, changed the images, changed the text, broke things and fixed them. I taught myself that method and started hustling with it — building websites before I was truly "good," learning by doing paid work. Eventually I went searching for a better way to build, and that's when I found WordPress. That became my home for years.

The call centre years — and the research that changed everything

After leaving May Day High School in Mandeville — six CXC subjects: maths, English, Spanish, French, music and electrical installation — I moved to Montego Bay about a year later to work at a call centre. I was good at it, and I stayed three years and three months. But the job gave me something more valuable than the paycheque: internet access and time to research. That's where I discovered online work existed. I signed up everywhere — Upwork, Guru, Freelancer — but Upwork had the best-looking site and the most people, so that's where I dug in. Life eventually moved us back to Mandeville, but by then the seed was already planted.

My first job paid ten cents an hour. I took it on purpose.

My very first online job paid somewhere between ten and twenty-five US cents per hour. Ridiculously low — and I took it gladly. Because I wasn't chasing the money yet; I was chasing the number on my profile. I knew that earnings figure and those reviews had to climb before anyone serious would trust me. So I took the cheapest jobs on the platform and did them properly: reviewing books, writing product descriptions, adding products to other people's websites — everything and anything. Every odd job taught me another software, another system, another way businesses work. I was getting paid pennies to build a toolkit worth thousands.

Then WordPress's own company hired me

The reputation ladder worked. Through Upwork I landed temporary contracts with Automattic — the company behind WordPress.com, Tumblr and Pressable — on the Pressable side — Automattic's hosting arm — doing live chat and email support for WordPress customers. And I'll be honest: it humbled me. I walked in as a WordPress designer and met problems that demanded real technical depth. Some days I felt bad about what I didn't know. But when the contract ended, I didn't sulk — I went and learned exactly the things that had exposed me. That gap became the curriculum.

The AI turning point

Here's the part that surprises people: up until last year, I was still a regular WordPress designer — moving things around, doing good client work, same as thousands of others.
