Starting a business in Jamaica is easier than you think. This guide walks you through every step โ from getting your TRN to going online. Follow this plan and you can be legally registered and operating within 7 days.
Before You Start: Choose Your Business Structure
Jamaica has two main options for small businesses:
Sole Trader (Recommended for Most)
- โ Free registration
- โ Same-day approval
- โ Simple tax filing
- โ Full control
- โ ๏ธ Personal liability for business debts
Limited Company
- โ Limited liability protection
- โ More professional image
- โ Easier to get loans/investment
- โ ๏ธ Higher registration costs (~$15,000-25,000 JMD)
- โ ๏ธ More paperwork and compliance
๐ก Our Recommendation
Start as a sole trader. It's free, fast, and sufficient for most small businesses. You can always convert to a limited company later when you grow.
Step 1: Get Your TRN (Day 1)
Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN)
Every business in Jamaica needs a TRN. This is your tax identification number.
- Where: Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) office or online
- Cost: FREE
- Time: Same day to 2 business days
- Bring: Valid ID (passport or national ID), proof of address
Online option: Visit jamaicatax.gov.jm to apply online. You'll still need to visit a TAJ office to collect your TRN card.
Step 2: Register Your Business (Day 2)
Companies Office of Jamaica (COJ) Registration
Register your business name and structure with the COJ.
- Where: Companies Office of Jamaica or online at orcjamaica.com
- Cost: FREE for sole traders / $15,000-25,000 JMD for limited companies
- Time: Same day (sole trader) / 3-5 days (limited company)
For Sole Traders:
- Go to orcjamaica.com
- Create an account
- Search to make sure your business name isn't taken
- Complete the registration form
- Submit โ approval is usually same day
- Download your Business Registration Certificate
For Limited Companies:
- Search and reserve your company name ($500 JMD)
- Prepare Articles of Incorporation
- File with COJ (fees vary by share capital)
- Wait 3-5 business days for approval
- Collect your Certificate of Incorporation
โ ๏ธ Name Search First
Always search if your business name is available before you print signs or order business cards. Someone else might already have it registered.
Step 3: Open a Business Bank Account (Day 3)
Business Banking
Keep business and personal finances separate. This makes tax time easier and looks more professional.
- Where: NCB, Scotiabank, JMMB, or any commercial bank
- Cost: Usually free to open, monthly fees vary
- Time: Same day to 3 days
Documents Needed:
- โ Valid ID (passport or national ID)
- โ TRN
- โ Business Registration Certificate from COJ
- โ Proof of address (utility bill, less than 3 months old)
- โ For limited companies: Articles of Incorporation, board resolution
๐ก Bank Comparison
NCB: Most branches, good mobile app. Scotiabank: Good for international transfers. JMMB: Lower fees, good for small business. Compare before you choose.
Step 4: Get Online (Day 4)
Digital Presence
Most customers will search for you online. At minimum, you need a Google Business Profile and social media.
Essential Online Presence:
- Google Business Profile (free) โ Shows up when people search for businesses like yours
- WhatsApp Business (free) โ Professional messaging with catalog feature
- Instagram/Facebook (free) โ Where your customers hang out
- Website (from $499) โ Your 24/7 salesperson
Optional but Recommended:
- Payment gateway (Lynk, NCB Payments) โ Accept card payments
- Booking system โ If you take appointments
- Email with your domain โ looks professional
Step 5: Additional Registrations (If Needed)
Depending on your business type, you may need:
- GCT Registration โ Required if earning over $10M JMD annually (register with TAJ)
- Food Handler's Permit โ Required for food businesses (Ministry of Health)
- Trade License โ Some parishes require this (Parish Council)
- Professional License โ For doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.
